Haisai! Good news from Okinawa!
In the reconstruction work of Shurijo Castle in Naha City, which was destroyed by fire in 2019, the main wooden framework assembly has been largely completed.
On the 14th, master temple carpenters and other craftsmen reported the progress to the press. The symbolic main hall is now almost finished, and after interior painting and other final work, it is scheduled to open to the public in the fall of 2026!!
Indeed, the Symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom Returns!
Shurijo Castle suffered a devastating fire in October 2019, which completely destroyed seven structures, including the main hall.
In the fall of 2026, the main hall and the corridors on both sides are scheduled to reopen first.
After that, reconstruction work will begin on other buildings such as the North Hall and South Hall.
It will be incredibly exciting to see this newly rebuilt symbol of Okinawa rise once again!
What’s Shuri Catsle
Shurijo Castle is one of Okinawa’s most iconic historical landmarks.
It was once the home of the kings of the Ryukyu Kingdom and served as the political and cultural center of Okinawa for centuries.
The castle is known for its beautiful architecture, which blends Chinese, Japanese, and unique Okinawan influences. Its vivid red main hall became a beloved symbol of Okinawa and was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

However, in October 2019, a large fire destroyed several major buildings, including the main hall. Even so, with the strong hopes of many people who wished to see it restored, reconstruction work is now steadily underway.
Once completed, Shurijo Castle is expected to once again attract visitors from around the world as a place where people can experience the rich history and culture of Okinawa.

Shureimon Gate: Shreimon Gate is a famous gate standing at the entrance to Shurijo Castle and is one of Okinawa’s most recognizable symbols.
The word “Shurei” means “valuing courtesy and respect,” and the gate displays the phrase “Shurei no Kuni,” which translates to “The Land of Courtesy.” This reflects the spirit and values of the former Ryukyu Kingdom.
The gate is known for its beautiful Chinese-inspired design and striking red-tiled roof, making it a popular sightseeing spot today. It is also famous for being featured on Japan’s former 2,000-yen banknote.

Shurijo Castle Park is filled not only with fascinating historical spots, but also with stunning photo locations that will make you want to capture every moment!
From beautiful red-tiled architecture to charming stone pathways and breathtaking Okinawan scenery, simply walking through the park lets you experience the unique atmosphere of the Ryukyu Kingdom ♪
